How To Practice "Minimalist Prepping" In Our Get Home Bags

We've all seen the memes of the 400 lb dude carrying a 400 lb bug out bag
Everything he could ever want in there. That's not at all practical.
Actually, many of us probably carry more in our bags than we need, and that adds weight, especially in a get home bag we might have to wear for an extended period of time.
On today's episode we are going to discuss How To Practice "Minimalist Prepping" In Our Get Home Bags, and these principles can be practiced in our prepping at home as well.

Minimalist prepping is a philosophy. It's an approach to emergency preparedness that focuses on essential supplies and maximizing skills while minimizing excess and unnecessary items. It emphasizes simplicity, efficiency, and practicality

Minimalists prioritize versatile and multi-functional items, such as a compact first aid kit, water purification tablets, portable shelter options, and very basic tools.

The goal is to maintain a lightweight and easily manageable kit that can be adapted to different scenarios.

We have the luxury of being able to store a lot of handy things for prepping at home, but we don't have that luxury in our get home bags.

The principles of minimalist prepping revolve around simplicity, practicality, efficiency, and adaptability.

We have to find a balance in what we carry. We need water, but most of us can't carry three gallons of water in our bag.
"The more we know, the less we have to carry" but we have to have the skills!
We'll talk more about that in a bit.

Let’s talk about some key principles of minimalist prepping:

1.    Essentialism:
Focusing on acquiring only the essential supplies while still covering the major prepping categories

Water & Food
Minimalist may carry water purification tabs rather than a personal water filter.
They may carry only calorie dense power bars, or powdered instant soup mix.

Fire
Lighter & Ferro rod

Cutting tool
Quality knife

Shelter & Clothing
Cordage
Lightweight tarp
Weather appropriate clothing

Lighting
Flashlight, headlamp & Extra batteries

First aid
Compact first aid kit - not a trauma bag
Just a couple of bandages, gauze, antibiotic cream, band aids, butterfly bandages, pain relief rub or roll-on, and maybe an emergency blanket.

Navigation
Compass
Map

Personal safety
Firearm, knife, hiking stick
Situational awareness

2. Multi-functionality:
The minimalists pioritize items that serve multiple purposes, and minimizes the number of items in your kit.

Single walled stainless steel water bottle rather than a pot. It can be used to carry water, boil water, or even contain survival items inside the bottle.

Multitool covers many functions
You can do anything from making repairs to preparing food.

Tarp
Tarps can be used to make shelter, use as a ground cover, for wind protection, or rainwater collection.

Paracord
Used for lashing items to a pack, building a shelter, making traps, or as fishing line.

Duct tape
Lash things
Stop a leak in a tent or tarp
Repair a boot or shoe
Fashion a water container for drinking

3. Emphasize quality over quantity:
Invest in high-quality, durable gear and supplies
They last longer and perform reliably when needed
Fixed blade knife
Full tang, strong grip
Name brand lighters rather than dollar store, such as BIC or Scripto

GOALS:

Versatility:
Items and skills that can be adapted to various scenarios and emergencies,
(rather than preparing for specific, unlikely events.)
Has as much to do with our prepping generally, not just our bag

Skill development:
Emphasis on developing practical skills
Said "The more you know the less you have to carry.
Skills necessary for survival and emergency situations
First aid, - take
Navigation,
Fire-making,
Basic survival techniques,
invaluable in emergency situations.
Obtaining food
Foraging, trapping, fishing
Water purification

Mobility:
Aim for a lightweight and portable kit
Easily carried or transported,
allows for mobility and flexibility during emergencies.

Resourcefulness:
Cultivate a mindset of resourcefulness and adaptability,
Learn to make the most of available resources
What can you find along the way to repurpose?
Learn to improvise solutions when necessary
"Redneck engineering"

Continuous improvement:
Regularly assess and improve your preparedness plans
Regularly review and streamline
Prepping supplies
Also, your....
gear - check that it is in working order
Skills to maintain a lean and efficient setup
Changing circumstances - children born, someone become disabled
