Episode # 442, Our Forefathers Understood Preparedness, But In Ways And For Reasons Different From Our Own
In our last episode we discussed why some people resist prepping. In this episode we discuss how our forefathers understood preparedness and some of the ways they prepared.
This episode may remind you of some methods they used that would be helpful in your prepping.
The motivation for our forefathers to be prepared:
The motive for our forefathers to prep was not the same as most preppers today. They didn’t call it “prepping”, they called it “life.”
They knew that they had to be prepared to live from the end of the harvest, through the winter, and until the garden began producing the next year, on the food they had stored.
Here are some of the topics we covered that our forefathers used as they prepared for life.
Preparedness methods of our forefathers
They used several methods to preserve meat including smoking meat, salt or sugar curing meats, drying, or making jerky.
Several of the methods they used for preserving vegetables were canning, drying, hanging, and storing in root cellars.
Krista told us the history of how canning came to be, and it may surprise you that it goes back to the time of Napoleon.
Normalcy bias keeps many from being prepared.
We discussed normalcy bias causing many to see no reason to prep. We also discussed how many in the younger generations have been pampered; how their parents and grandparents have “fixed” their every problem and never allowed them to fail. When you live in pampered convenience, you become dependent. This will cause many of those to be willfully unprepared for any catastrophic event, believing that someone else will “fix” it.
We discussed how our forefathers had to have everything they might need to repair whatever broke, and the necessary skills to make those repairs. We, as well, need to have at least minimal repair items for basic emergency home repairs and the skills to make those repairs.
Hopefully, this episode will remind you of not only the importance of preparedness, but may remind you of some methods you could use to become better prepared.
Stuff happens. Stay prepared.
