We are five weeks from the anniversary of the Interstate 95 fiasco
On January 4th, 2022, fifty miles of I-95 in Virginia was shut down with one inch of snow after traffic was backed up after a traffic accident. Thousands were stranded for twenty-seven to thirty hours. Most of them were inadequately prepared for such an event.
We are already seeing snow storms across the Northeast, Midwest, and high mountain regions and we want YOU to be prepared in case you are stranded in a show or ice storm.
If you live in the southwest or south Florida where you very rarely see show, there are still lots of items here that you could use in your vehicle’s emergency kit
This is a different kit than your car kit or get home kit.
It is intended to be in addition to your car bag or get home bag.
First Aid Kit
bandages
antiseptic wipes
pain relievers
Clothing kit
Warm Clothing
extra layers
Sweat shirts, flannel shirts
Warm gloves
Hats, toboggans
Scarves
Insulated waterproof boots
Extra Socks
Heavy Blanket or Sleeping Bag can be additional insulation to keep you warm in your vehicle
Emergency Blankets: Keep warm blankets to retain body heat
Hand Warmers: These can provide additional warmth
Multipurpose Tool Kit
Basic Tools:
pliers, screwdrivers, and wrenches
multi-tool or knife
Flashlight
Extra batteries
Jumper Cables: In case your battery is dead
Tow Rope or Chain
To get pulled out, or pull another out
Compact Fire Extinguisher
In case of a vehicle fire
Car Emergency Escape Tool:
Window Breaker/Seatbelt Cutter
designed for breaking car windows and cutting seatbelts
Use the headrest to break a window if you have nothing else.
Pull it out of the seat. There are two rods that hold it in place but are designed to break windows if you are trapped.
Small Shovel: Use for digging out snow around your tires.
Waterproof Matches or Lighter:
for starting a fire in emergencies
Tinder – ie: Wetfire, Blackbeard
Tarp or Space Blanket
Emergency shelter
Roadside Emergency Reflectors
Make your vehicle visible to other drivers
Reflective Vest or Clothing
To make YOU more visible when outside your vehicle
Traction Aids
Sand or Kitty Litter
Provide traction if your vehicle gets stuck.
Tire Chains
Especially useful in areas with heavy snow.
Ice Melt or Salt:
to melt ice around your tires for better traction
Small Insulated Cooler
Use a small insulated cooler to store perishable items and keep them from freezing overnight
Take it into the house at night, and take it with you again tomorrow
Might look at weather forecast to decide
Bottled Water
Any Necessary Medication
Non-Perishable Snacks: High-energy items like granola bars, nuts, or dried fruit.
