Episode # 398, "Using Our Preps After A Tornado"

In this episode we will be talking about relying on our preps this past Tuesday night after a tornado touched down in our county, causing 25,000 people, including us, to lose electrical power. Today, we are talking about what we did and how we fared.

First, we corrected something from our last episode. We related something we saw on social media that was an image of a lady taking a pan of bread out of the mailbox, and it implied that she had baked it in the mailbox due to extreme heat. That was incorrect, and we owned up to the mistake and corrected it.

Wednesday's episode was recorded Tuesday afternoon and we mentioned expecting some severe weather later in the day.

Later that afternoon, Tuesday, July18th, severe weather arrived.

It was later determined that an EF-0 tornado touched down about 10 miles from us, was on the ground for a short distance and lifted up. It took down quite a few power poles, left trees blocking roadways, flooded streets, and roofs damaged.

After lifting up, the tornado continued traveling directly over our house. The power in our community was out for a total of only about four hours, but it was good practice for using our preps.

While Still daylight, between bands of rain, we moved the generator from the garage to the patio.

When it began to get dark, we deployed our lights out kit which contains battery operated LED lanterns and flashlights.

We wanted to try a few things:

We clipped a flashlight into an empty milk jug. It worked pretty well giving is light for 360 degrees, and gave us more light than one of the LED lanterns.

We activated a chemical light stick, and found it about the same amount of light as a night light. It would be good for lighting small areas light in total darkness, such as a bathroom, hallway, or inside a tent

One concern was for the refrigerator. Krista's research shows that after only about four hours, no opening, it can warm enough that food could begin to spoil.

By the way, freezers are safe for twenty-four hours.

We set up the generator, ran an extension cord through a kitchen window, and connected the fridge.  After a bit, we rand extension cord den to power a lamp for Krista to continue studying for her ham radio General exam. We also connected a box fan, placed it in a window to better deal with heat.

We had plan for powering Mark's CPAP, but the power was restored before we went to be. That plan involves runningan inverter on a car battery & plugging the CPAP into the inverter.

The take away from our practice? our preps worked, and our plans worked. We did to improve our plans with a few tweaks such as relocting our generator, buying dedicated extension cords and a deep cycle battery for the CPAP & ham radio.
