Episode # 391  Notes

Episode # 391 "How And What To Prep At Work"

Most of us carry some type of bag in our car.
It's usually a "get-home bag," general purpose emergency bag, or at least a first aid kit

What  about if something happens while we are at work? What if you can't get to your car? It could be a medical issue with a co-worker. It could be a fire. It could be an active shooter.
What would you have you could use? What would you be able to do?

This Episode assumes you have a Get-Home-Bag in the vehicle, IF you drive your vehicle to work.

If don't drive a vehicle to work, you could have a GHB stored at your place of work.
(If you car pool, take the subway, or train, etc)

We covered some items you should keep at your place of work, In your locker, office, cubicle, or desk.

General Prepping Items For Work:

A prepper staple is a First aid kit including band aids, antibiotic creme, and antiseptic wipes.

OTC (over the counter) Medications including pain relievers, imodium, antihistomine, and antacids.

Stock some emergency food and water such as non-perishable food items, energy bars, canned goods, and bottled water

Be sure to have a flashlight and extra batteries, in case of a power outage

Always handy is a power bank and charger cord in case of an extended power outage.

Keep a printed copy of your emergency contact list
Not only should you have your personal contact numbers, but also  police, fire, and medical contact numbers in case regular communications are disrupted.

You should have some Personal hygiene items such as hand sanitizer, tissues, and wet wipes.

Specific Items In Case Of a Fire or an Active Shooter

You could be cut off from normal evacuation routes by fire or an active shooter.
If you are on the first or second floor, you may have to evacuate through a window.
You should consider keeping a spring loaded center punch to break a window to escape.

For a more serious first aid kit, you should consider an IFAK   (Individual First Aid Kit). The IFAK, based on a military design, are intended to be a life saver in the event of gunshot wounds, but can be used in treating many major wounds, even from automobile accidents. They are particularly useful in amputations and major arterial bleeding from the arms and legs.

Contents:
            Tourniquet
            Israeli Bandage
            Hemostatic clotting agent
            Sterile Bandages
            Gauze pads
            Rolled gauze
            Adhesive tape
            Trauma shears
            Gloves
            First aid manual

An item not usually considered is
to keep a small fire extinguisher in your office.  By code, fire extinguishers are stationed throughout the workplace, but having a smallish one in your office could be a lifesaver. In addition to fighting fire, it could be a formidable weapon of self defense in a "run-hide-fight" situation. There are two ways to use it in that situation, swiftly applied to the bridge of the hose or head, or spray the powdered agent into the face of an attacker. Either works.

We also suggest that you keep some sort of Emergency communication device in your office. It can be a handheld ham radio for contacting someone if regular communications are cut off.  A portable battery operated radio will let you receive information during emergency situations or power outages.
