Prioritize Water Storage

February 23, 2024

Spring storm season is just around the corner. Water lines can be damaged when trees are uprooted, disrupting water supply to neighborhoods or individual homes.

Access to clean water is crucial. Ensure you have an adequate supply for drinking, cooking, and sanitation by storing at least one gallon per person per day for a minimum of five days.

Consider investing in a gravity water filter, or a personal portable water filter, and store some water purification tablets, as a backup, for additional security.

Don't wait until disaster strikes – stock up on water now to safeguard yourself and your loved ones."

There are some MAJOR changes coming to the podcast for 2024.

Read about it, or listen HERE

Happy New Year!

December 31, 2023

Tomorrow starts a new year and brings some major changes to Practical Prepping.

One major change is that we are moving from three episodes per week to two episodes per week as we add more features to the podcast.

Introducing Voice Messages: If you look to the right side of this page, you'll see that you can now leave us voice messages. You can use this to answer "The Question Of The Month," a new segment of the podcast.

Another new addition is a Practical Prepping Facebook Group. Click here to see it.

We are going to break episodes into segments. Here are a few examples:

"Medical Mondays" - medical tips, first aid, medications, combat medicine, etc.

"Question of the month" - we'll ask a question and give you a few weeks to answer then we'll compile the answers on an episode. If you use the voice message feature to answer, we'll use your voice in the episode!

"Ask The Expert" - you ask the question, we'll find the expert to answer that question or we will do a ton of research and dig into it on the show.

Homesteading, Solar power, Gear reviews, Tinctures, Gardening, and Canning are some others on the list.

So, as we say "bye" to 2023 and "hello" to 2024, we hope you will join us in making it our best year yet.

Tennessee Tornadoes, And Staying Prepared In Case we Are In The Path

December 11, 2023

Saturday, December 3, two days ago, an EF-3 tornado north of Nashville, killed six, injured many more, and left a path of destruction of around forty miles.

Even though tornadoes are not as common in December as they are in the Spring, they do happen.

Tornadoes can be incredibly destructive and pose a serious threat to life and property. It's critical that we have a plan in place and be prepared to act quickly when tornado warnings are issued.

So we want to review our tornado safety plan, and if we are missing something we can get ready before the spring tornado season.

Here is the episode and the expanded notes.

We must protect ourselves!

November 30, 2023

Yesterday's episode of Practical Prepping (#436) was

"Staying safe, and protecting ourselves against terrorist attacks at crowded public events."
How timely. I saw this morning that yesterday evening, in New York City, there was a riot at a tree lighting, and that the riot was instigated by Hamas sympathizers.
These are perilous times in which we are living, and we need to be very careful when we are out in public.

Hurricane Safety: Tips For Protecting Lives and Property
August 25, 2023

1. Stay informed:

Keep track of weather updates and warnings issued by local authorities.
Monitor reliable weather sources such as the National Weather Service or your local news.

2. Create an emergency plan:
Develop a detailed plan with your family or household members.
Determine evacuation routes, designate meeting points, and establish communication methods.

3. Prepare an emergency kit:
Assemble a well-stocked kit with essential supplies like non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and a first aid kit.
Don't forget to include important documents and cash.

4. Secure your property:
Secure loose objects that could become projectiles in high winds.
Reinforce windows and doors, and consider installing hurricane shutters.
If advised, board up windows to protect against flying debris.

5. Evacuate when necessary:
Follow evacuation orders promptly.
If you live in a coastal or low-lying area prone to storm surge or flooding, it is safer to evacuate to a designated shelter or a safe location outside the storm's path.

6. Stay indoors during the storm:
Seek shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows.
Avoid using candles and rely on flashlights instead.
Be prepared to take immediate action if conditions worsen.

7. Post-storm precautions:
After the hurricane passes, be cautious of hazards such as downed power lines, flooded areas, and weakened structures.
Only return home when authorities deem it safe.

8. Look out for your neighbors, especially those who may need assistance.
Stay safe!

“Beat the Heat: Stay Cool and Safe!”
July 21, 2023

As temperatures soar, it's crucial to take precautions and protect yourself from the scorching heat. Here are some tips to help you stay cool and avoid heat-related issues during extreme heat:

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!  Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay properly hydrated. Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages as they can dehydrate you further.

Dress for the heat! Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to allow b
etter airflow and reflect sunlight. Don't forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection.

Seek shade or air-conditioned spaces!  When outdoors, find shade under trees, awnings, or tents to shield yourself from direct sunlight. If needed, spend time in air-conditioned areas like malls, libraries, or community centers to cool down.

Plan outdoor activities wisely! Schedule your outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours to prevent overheating.

Use sunscreen! Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply it every two hours, especially if you're sweating or swimming.

Never leave anyone in a parked vehicle!  It's crucial to remember that temperatures inside a car can skyrocket within minutes, even with the windows cracked. Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked vehicle.

Extreme heat can be dangerous.
Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe!

Prioritizing Self-care

July 7, 2023

I was doing research for a podcast episode and came across this information. We believe it will be helpful in day-to-day activities as well as in emergency situations.

Here are some ways you can prioritize self-care:

1. Set boundaries: Learn to say no when you need to and establish healthy boundaries in your personal and professional life. This allows you to allocate time and energy for self-care activities.

2. Practice self-reflection: Take time to reflect on your needs, emotions, and goals. This can help you identify areas ...

Water and Beach Safety - by American Red Cross
06/15/2023

Water Safety
Every day, an average of 11 people die in the U.S. from unintentional drowning — and one in five of those are children 14 or younger according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Red Cross wants everyone to know critical safety knowledge and skills that could save your life in and around the water. We encourage families to build confidence in the water by learning to be safe, making good choices, learning to swim and how to handle emergencies.
Preventing unsupervised access to water, providing constant, active adult supervision and knowing how to swim are critical layers of protection to help prevent drowning.

Grilling Safety

June 13, 2023

Though more than three-quarters of U.S. adults have used a grill — yet, grilling sparks more than 10,000 home fires on average each year.

To avoid this, the American Red Cross offers these grilling safety tips:

- Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use. Don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
- Never grill indoors — not in the house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.
- Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill.
- Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.
- Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to help keep the chef safe.
- Don't leave perishable food out in the sun.
